While I agree with this sentiment I belive that there no reason why cultural expectations should clash with people self determination. Now I think you would agree that we should encourage a man to be a man just like how we would hope a duck would act like a duck and a dog to act like a dog. Would you not deem it detrimental for an animal to act or behave like another animal? Now the question truly would be what consistutes as acting like a man? To that I would say is what is the most natural way to act.
I agree that culture shouldn’t, that said, I would also say it often does. That’s why I’ve landed at the point where the question, “What does it mean to act like a man?” is troublesome.
On the dog and duck, I’m curious about the difference that comes with a developed prefrontal cortex.
I would also point out that when animals get violent, even though it is only natural, we put them down.
I would say about a prefrontal cortex is us having to be responsible as while most animals cannot question things like this, we can. The give an incredible responsibility as we can shape our own culture. This can allows us to ethier advance far further or be completely catastrophic.
As for the violent, that comes mainly from human superiority complex. We put down animals and tell our selves it was mercy. In some cases that's not entirely untrue. But for me with my experience of doing animal rescue is that we don't really want to work to try and re domesticate the animal. We are bad with human mental health so animal mental health is not even considered for treatment. But I have seen very violent animals become very passive. Most notable cases are pitbulls that where made to fight. Animals are never violent for no reason.
What's natural to us, when combined with the culture we're raised in, can shape us into relatively awful humans, and yet, because it's natural, it's all too easy to brush it off as, "Boys will be boys."
My entire argument isn't to deny what's truly natural (our biology) but to work with it, shape it, craft it, mold it, and use it to serve others. At the same time, I'm highlighting the mass variance in that biology, even between two males so just because someone is a guy, there is no need for him to try and force his body and behavior into a specific mold (which is where it can hinder self-determination).
I think then the focus of a Modern Framwork for Manhood should be about teach boys both discover their particular manly triats and how they can highlight and use their those qualities to be most effective instead of creating a model of an ideal Man should be. And entering Manhood their should be a test or a series of test for a boy to reflect to him self his vision of a man. What do you think?
I am a big fan of the idea of rites of passage, something we lack in Western society. I don't see today's conception of the Spartan Agoge as the modern answer, as I think there's a whole lot more to men than the warrior (I've got a post coming on that), but yes to purposeful movement from boyhood is key ... although we need to do that with pretty much every male out there right now since most of us have never done something like that and we're still searching.
I have a few ideas that I will be posting as soon as I figure out how substack works. I don't how you made you post as nicely as you did. I am assuming you did it on PC?

I think you're getting the points I was making.

Thoughts?

I can definitely run with that.
